My lesson structure is very flexible and has plenty of room for input from the student. My job as your teacher will be to give you technique building excercises and songs that will sharpen the fundamentals of playing your instrument. There are 3 parts to a lesson that I always like to touch on. 1) technique and warmups, 2) assigned material designed to be the stepping stones to your personal goals. 3) something that the student has picked out or has special interest in. I'm a patient, energetic, understanding, highly-motivated teacher who loves training people to accomplish their musical goals. I teach from the experience of a songwriter and performer, someone who started off as an ear-based, self-taught guitarist and has worked his way up to to a BA in Composition, recorded and released music for three Seattle rock bands, and performs regularly. This diverse background makes me relatiable to students with all different learning styles, interests, and skill sets. Read More

I believe any student regardless of age has to learn the three fundamentals pillars of music to truly learn an instrument. Those foundations are: Harmony, rhythm, and melody. The way in which I go about teaching them or reinforcing them depends on the age, musical interest, and skill. Usually kids benefit the most from learning their favorite melodies, how to read music, and how to play some chords to play their favorite songs. Read More

Decades of performing experience, playing in a multitude of settings: concert, club, college, coffeehouse, private and corporate functions, etc. I STUDIED SONGWRITING WITH: Sheila Davis (author of several best selling books, including The Craft Of Lyric Writing, Writers Digest) and Lou Stallman (co-writer of #1 RB hit, Its Gonna Take A Miracle). No single approach works with every student when teaching drums. There are simply too many styles and methods to choose from. But when working with beginners, I tend to focus mostly on developing a good internal sense of rhythm and good listening skills. Then if the student wishes, we may specialize in classical, jazz, rock, latin, or whatever style the student is interested in. There are many excelent published methods to choose from and I occasionally assign etudes and excersizes of my own. Read More

As a musical teacher, I believe one of the most important goals is to learn to have fun while you practice. If your goal is to become a serious musician, many hours of practice is key but that cannot happen if you don't have the drive and motivation for it, so you must first enjoy what you are doing. I have always found that young children give up on their instruments too quickly because they find it to be too tedious or even boring. Read More

I'm more of a "laid back" type of teacher. No whips or teachers rulers here. Music is supposed to be fun!!If you're not having fun, what's the point? After 3 to 6 months, you should expect to be playing some of your favorite songs and artists accurately. Remember-Even if you don't want to play professionally, maybe you just want to learn a few chords, licks, songs, for yourself, or to impress friends. That's ok too! Read More
