I believe in shaping a lesson around the student. First, I find out what the student wants to focus on more, whether it is notation and musical theory, or learning a few basic chords, strumming patterns and such, to be able to play their favorite songs. No matter their ability, this method of teaching is effective because I find that it keeps the students interested and engaged. A mix of theory and technique is always encouraged, but ultimately, I create the lessons around what the student wants. Read More

When I begin with a new student, I generally jam and analyze my student's abilities, skill level, techniques and interests/desires in music styles. When I have a good idea about my student's ability and skill level, we begin with focusing on what needs to be improved. For beginner children, I like to focus on the fundamentals and keep interest with keeping things creative, exciting and fun! For adults, I like to analyze my student's musical interests and try to associate lessons in that style of repertoire. Read More

My teaching style is overall fairly laid back. I let my students set the pace, but I also expect them to be passionate, curious, and hard-working. I love to encourage students as they explore different areas of their playing, and try different ideas. I push my students just out of their comfort zone, and force them to take risks. I encourage musical open mindedness, which means I truly think that there is value in all different styles of music. Read More

I have also introduced and taught adults to instruments they now play professionally. I am currently a music mentor with a local non-profit that brings music to foster care children. Read More

As we advance into soloing, we'll add more information around fretboard knowledge and visualization techniques. I will always explain "why" we are learning something, whether it's a particular technique or topic and "how" we go about accomplishing it. For Intermediate level students, I'll take music theory a little deeper and we'll gain an understanding of different styles and progressions such as the 12-bar (Blues), 1-4-5 (Rock/Pop) and 2-5-1 (Jazz) progressions in popular music along with soloing techniques.
