I think being well rounded is important with music and one thing that I've noticed is building on what the student is interested in. Started off with materials builds important fundamentals, but if my student is nodding off to sleep, then I'm not doing my job. I'll begin by setting a goal and seeing what the student is interested in (i.e. what band/song would they like to learn about?) From there, I'll set a realistic goal (Flight of the Bumblebee can't and shouldn't be the first song on guitar that you learn) and we'll learn the techniques, structure, and music theory that exists in a certain song. My number One thing is that it has to be fun learning otherwise the students get bored easily and disinterested so I always incorporate learning real music while you’re learning theory and carefully assessing the students strong points and trouble spots all the while giving them goals and consistent practice schedule And the critical importance of using a Metronome and having excellent timing. In addition to partimento, I use other traditional methods. For beginner students who are children, I typically start with the James Bastien method. I like this method because it combines reading and playing the piano from the very beginning in a well-structured progression. Then it introduces important new concepts with fun (if charmingly old-fashioned) songs designed for teaching.
