My teaching experience encompasses students of all ages. I began teaching in the UK where I taught voice lessons St. Georges School, Windsor Castle, for 4 years to boys and girls aged 4-13. I also taught solo and group lessons at a local High School. I currently teach private voice lessons and substitute at a DC area voice studio. Over the years I have taught multiple genres of music, including pop, folk and musical theatre, though predominantly my experience lies within the realms of classical, opera and choral music. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. Although it is my responsibility to teach fundamentals of playing the instrument and reading music correctly, I spend as much time as I can on not becoming enslaved to the printed page. In other words, once a student begins to play at a higher level, I introduce how to express oneself and the music in an aesthetically satisfying manner. For beginning students who are children, I usually use the Alfred Music Piano Methods series, and include music theory and ear training as a part of the curriculum. Once students have grasped the fundamentals, I will introduce solo repertoire appropriate for receital performances to encourage and motivate their learning. I received a Bachelor degree in Guitar Performance from Catholic University in Washington DC back in 1980. However, my career was in computer programming for the next 30 years. Through out the years of both learning, playing and up to present doing more teaching and classes i've realized the need to practice ones instrument. I also figured that practice just after a class means a lot as you tend to remember a lot that you talked about in a class session!
