As my students get into more advanced music, I select solo literature that best fits their musical abilities. For my vocal students I select music that is appropriate for them from the very beginning. For my male vocal students, I coach them through the voice change, which is a rewarding experience for me. I use my students' natural strengths to help them understand the aspects of music that come less naturally to them. For beginning children, I will usually select Hal Leonard or the Bastien series combined with appropriate solo repertoire. For intermediate students and adults who are beginners, I select from the Suzuki method or Hanon books combined with repertoire. I also like to find out the students' interests (classical, pop, musicals, and so forth) to select combinations of music that will be most engaging for them. I tailor each lesson to the student, and depending on the students needs and goals, create lesson plans with a "project management" outlook that include objectives for the weeks ahead. Read More
