I typically use Steve Hedrick's Band Fundamentals book with beginners. If a student is currently enrolled in a band program, I am comfortable using whichever method book their teachers has selected. I gradually begin to introduce solo repertoire and creative activities such as composition and improvisation. With more advanced students, I will typically use a "cornerstone" book from the literature pertaining to their instrument. I graduated from Washington and Lee University in 2013 with a BA in Music Theory/Composition, as well as a BS in Mathematics. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
