Instruments: Drums

My teaching style is based around the phrase of I want to teach you how to fish, not just have you pay for fish. I don't want to be your fishmonger. I want to give you the tools & fulfill my role to prepare you to be the best drummer you can be. My beliefs a student comes with ideas and goals in regards to their respective instrument or task, and a teacher supposed to help them express those ideas or help them accomplish what they want to do yet also refine technique and their approach to the instrument. I began teaching private lessons at the beginning of my time at Michigan State University. I have experience teaching all ages and skill levels including very young first timers up to experienced adults. In addition to private lessons, I have taught at the Apprentices in Jazz Workshop in Fort Lauderdale, Florida as a woodwind instructor, improvisation teacher, as well as big band director. While I am most experienced in Jazz, I love playing and teaching all types of music! Read More

I have a routine that I use for the lesson time--breath exercises followed by the vocal warm up and then working on a piece. During that process I always encourage an open dialogue between myself and every student. I want to student to feel as comfortable as possible and always have the option to ask questions and take part in their development as a singer. My goal is to provide a nurturing and inspirational environment for every singer, despite that individual's level of singing or experience. Read More

I don't think there is any one method book or instructional DVD that will give you everything you need. Even if an educational resource is extremely well done, it will still need to be tailored and digested in a certain way for each student. I generally use Mel Bay's Guitar 1 - expanded edition. While working with this book, there are additional materials such as exercises, concepts, and musical ideas often inserted at key moments. Read More

My style is encouraging, easy-going, patient and understanding.  I explain things as many times as necessary in a calm friendly manner since I know students (and all the rest of us) don't remember stuff the first time it is heard—or played—or read. I encourage questions and discussions about practicing, repertoire, performing, and careers. To be sure time is well spent, I'll sometimes say, "Practice this piece just as you would if I were not here."  This way I can offer suggestions for learning pieces and methods more quickly.   Practice time should be a joyful time, full of a sense of accomplishment, and I am especially keen to help make this so for all students. Instruments: Voice

Students need to enjoy and connect with the music they are singing, and I work with my students to find music they enjoy that also meets their developmental goals. I also encourage my students to perform in recitals and competitions, if sharing their voice is part of their personal and/or professional goals. Finally, knowing how busy people are these days, I work with my students to find creative ways of fitting in their practice and I teach them HOW to practice, since consistent, quality practice is critical to achieving their goals. I have always been passionate about music! I started taking lessons at 8years old and haven't stopped since. I knew right away that this was my calling, that music was going to be my life. I started teaching before I even graduated high school, helping and learning from my own instructors who helped me become a great teacher myself! I have had many amazing opportunities to play all across the country, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Lincoln Hall, Summerfest, and with Dizzy Reed of Guns and Roses. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
