I've found that being flexible and adaptible is most important to me, as everyone learns in a different way. I place a lot of importance on following student interest and goals as well, since it doesn't matter how great your instruction is if you're bored and don't want to keep playing. I think every student should get as much out of their lesson experience as they want, whether that means a more casual experience where you're not practicing too much throughout the week, or holding my student more accountable if they express more ambitious goals. For beginning students, we typically begin with Essential Elements while discovering fundamentals of the instrument and getting a handle on reading bass clef and rhythms. This of course varies on a student's previous experience or comfort with reading music. We progress from there into appropriate etudes that can be quite melodic and entertaining to practice and then beginning solo repertoire, and advance from there. I always encourage students to have a goal piece in mind that they would like to play, especially my adult students, so we can frame our goals around that and set up a plan of action as we move forward. I believe that drum has to start with the basics, I used to practice at least one hour a day every day for over 10 years. I still practice on a regular basis with my pads and on my drums. So many drummers you see today are not schooled and its a shame. if you start with a good solid foundation you can be the best there is.
