Instruments: Piano Guitar Harmonica Recorder Keyboard
I have taught all grades Pre-K all the way through 12, and have taught guitar, harmonica, and piano to learners from age 7 up to 60 and beyond. I have creative ways of communicating my thoughts to my students, allowing them to think beyond the familiar and truly understand music in a unique way. My lessons with my students are individualized, and designed to cater to student's unique abilities in lieu of a one-size-fits all approach. Read More
Instruments: Trombone
For beginners, I start by focusing on developing a good sound and ensuring that the student knows what a good sound is and what it is not. Air is the foundation of a good sound so, in my introductory lessons, I focus heavily on breathing and air support. This is a foundation that is continued throughout the time the student continues to take lessons. I then begin to work with the student on fundamentals such as articulation, slide control, intonation, etc. Read More
Instruments: Violin
Numerous violin teachers make one of two mistakes. Many give their students too little information, leaving the student to figure out the finer technical details on their own, while others feed the student too much information without breaking it down for them. In both cases the student progresses at a slower pace and is likely to become frustrated. My approach is much more step-by-step oriented, allowing the student to fully grasp a concept over the course of one lesson as opposed to several lessons, which results in significantly greater progress over time. Instruments: Voice Trumpet Saxophone Flute Clarinet
My teaching experience includes serving as a middle school band director, high school band director, middle school choir director, high school choir director, elementary school general music and choir teacher, and elementary school clarinet teacher. The youngest student I've ever taught was six years old, and I'm happy to work with children, adolescents, and adults. During undergrad in college, I also worked the music theory tutoring lab giving theory lessons to college students, so if a high school student is studying music theory, I would be able to assist with that as well. Instruments: Piano Violin
I began teaching private lessons ten years ago while in high school under my own music instructor. She assigned me younger students to co-teach with her as a way to grow my teaching skills. In college I ventured out on my own and began offering private music lessons out of my home. Additionally during this time I worked as a strings instructor at a local music group for homeschooled children. Read More
Instruments: Piano Drums Mallet Percussion
For beginning drum students, I typically like to start with the Percussive Arts Society sheet of rudiments to ensure a solid technical background as the student progresses. After that, we move on to simple reading and other drumming fundamental concepts including limb coordination, fills, phrasing and articulation, etc. With older students, I find it helpful to try and begin with what they are interested and comfortable in playing. This allows me to find connections and build lesson plans specifically for the individual. Read More
Instruments: Guitar Saxophone Flute Clarinet Bass Guitar Accordion Lap Steel Guitar Banjo Ukulele Mandolin Electric Guitar Acoustic Guitar
My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 40 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 20 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy their instrument and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
