I find it important to establish early on what motivates the student, and incorporate that into every lesson in some facet. My teaching experience dates back to my first year in Yamatai. As a more advanced percussionist, I took it upon myself to assist my fellow new recruits with learning the material outside of regular practice times with the Musical Director. With percussion, we found that taking a piece and breaking it into small sections that were easily repeatable gave the best results.
