My approach to teaching is to start simple and break down topics and themes into smaller goals that help the student feel a sense of accomplishment and eager to learn more. By letting the student's inspiration lead the way I can successfully guide them to reach those goals that they might not have had before starting the lesson. Nothing is more important for me than for a student's own creative mind to further their own curiosity from learning how to play their favorite song, understand a musical concept or make their instrument sound how they feel. Music is one of my many passions in life, and nothing pleases me more than sharing and teaching others about the wonderful skills that are developed when playing musical instruments. I'm the ultimate people person, taking the best interest in each individual student in order to progress their skills at an appropriate rate that is fun and exciting with each lesson! Music is challenging and can be frusterating at times, but leave it to me to help break down and simplify it so you can gain confidence in yourself and overall enjoy each lesson as we take steps towards your own goals. Over the past thirteen years, I have taught nearly 400 students - beginning as a junior in high school with four pianists. My teaching experiences have ranged from group lessons with fourth-grade, beginner clarinetists and saxophonists, to starting brand new five-year old pianists, to preparing high schoolers for competitive auditions and performances, to substitute lessons with adults. I actively seek to have my students play for people whenever they can (i.e. church, family gatherings), and I seek out and arrange more formal and organized events such as recitals or visiting the elderly and performing at retirement villages and nursing homes. I believe the foundation of progress is consistency, so I try to establish routines with my students, spending part of each lesson on technical exercises, theory/aural skills training, and repertoire. I also set performance goals for students by organizing recitals *this has been more tricky during Covid, but I think it is important nonetheless to get students to perform from memory at least twice a year (once at the end of fall and spring terms). I have been teaching for 30 years. The exciting thing is that private music lessons provides an opportunity to get to know students on an individual level. This means that each lesson is unique, and each student has lessons tailored to them. Getting to know what makes a student tick or understand is a highlight of my day! They often laugh at me because I have to ask what they are doing, and that I don't know off the top of my head because there are so many different things my students are doing. Read More
Instruments: Clarinet
Learning to play the clarinet can be an immensely fun and rewarding experience! As a teacher, it is my goal to share my love for music with my students so they too can develop a passion for it. I provide my students with the strong fundamentals that are necessary to developing musical skills and to becoming a successful clarinetist. Furthermore, I believe that if I can teach my students to analyze their playing like I analyze my own, they will become motivated self teachers and life-long learners. Read More
Instruments: Piano Keyboard
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music. Therefore. it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspired the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More
