My whole life I have played piano and later guitar until college. It ws a few years after i was married that i picked up guitar and with the help of a truly awesome teacher that my fever for playing returned. My teacher taught me many styles and always made sure that I progressedconsistantly. It is with that love and childlike drive that I learned from my teacher, that I carry on with today. Read More

I am a passionate and fun instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. For beginning students I like to focus attention on fundamental technique on both hands, making sure that they use the correct finger positioning on the bass. As they advance, the student will begin to know the whole fretboard through scales and arpeggios (in all keys) so the student knows where all the notes are in the instrument. For intermediate to advanced students I recommend books like "Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony" by Bert Ligon, "Fingerboard Harmony for Bass" by Gary Willis, "Funk Bass Fills" by Anthony Vitti, "The Latin Bass Book" by Oscar Stagnaro and "The Essential Jaco Pastorius" by Jaco Pastorius. I am able to asses the students current level of capability, understanding, and musical goals and tailor a curriculum to suit the specific needs and desires of the student. In terms of younger students who are first discvovering their interest in music, it is important to develop a basic foundation of understanding in terms of reading, writing, and communication with other musicians through the application of time tested teaching methods forcing the student to apply what they have learned in weekly "missions." For intermediate to advanced players, I'm able to help them to identify and subvert sticking points through the application of music theory, technique, and listening exercises as well as impart knowledge of the inner workings of music business and performance. A more exhaustive technique book is "Kitharologous" by R. Iznaola which can be challenging but very effective. Ramirez's technique book hints to the ideas shared by many that flamenco is to guitar technique what jazz is to that of the piano. A natural , easy and sure path to virtuosity of the instrument through it's most popular art form which forms a link to the classical tradition. The practice of jazz and boogie-woogie basses in the left hand is at the heart of piano artistry to strengthen the left hand and prepare to fill in with melodies in the right hand as much as the Rasgueado is in Flamenco to strengthen the extensor muscles of the right hand set the rhythm for the eventual filling in of melodies and falsetas.
