It was because of this grant that I was able to attend the Boston University Tanglewood Institute for Saxophone Performance, where I took lessons and studied with some of the North Shore's greatest saxophonists, such as Ken Radnofsky and Jennifer Bill. For several years in a row, I have attended the Massachusetts Music Educators Association conference and took a variety of different masterclasses centered around education and musicianship. Every student has their own particular set of strengths and weaknesses, goals and time contraints. I take the time to understand what each student is looking to get out of their lessons and custom-tailor a unique lesson plan for each student accordingly. Funnily enough, my first private lesson student was actually a peer while I was in high school who wanted some tips and tricks. I also maintained a small lesson studio consisting throughout my time at the University of Iowa. Those lessons were driven heavily by the interests of my students. I had one student trying to prepare for a collegiate music major audition, I had one with interest in becoming a composer, and a more casual student whose ultimate goal was to gain enough skills to lead music in church worship services.
