I use String Builder, Essential Elements, etudes, technical studies for each instrument and Suzuki Methods for strings and essential elements for clarinet. I emphasize good posture, holding the instrument and bow properly and correct finger placement. Also learning to play scales and music to prepare for auditions and a recital. My teaching direction is generally based on the individual's needs/requests. However, an in-depth look at universal bass techniques is what I implement in a student's lesson and practice assignment. I use George Vance's book Vade Mecum for introducing the positions of the double bass, thumb position, scales and arpeggios. I have found Developing Virtuosity by Latham Music, and Essentials for Strings by Gerald Anderson to be resourceful for rhythms, bowing variations, etudes, and an introduction into performance application. In high school I played in the New Jersey Youth Symphony Jazz Orchestra, my high school big band, various gigs as a lounge musician, as well as numerous rock groups with my friends and classmates.
