For my string students, I typically use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements at first, and then I introduce the Suzuki Method for solo repertoire once they have progressed on their instruments. For my vocal students, I find what type of music my student is interested in, and I then recommend a voice book that we will pick repertoire from. I have most students start with Essential Elements for fundamentals.  Then I progress to solo and duet repertoire when the time a student is able to grasp counterpoint and rhythm well.  Adult students can often move faster due to being able to understand the math behind music.  I also try to incorporate theory and history and culture with my lessons. Generally speaking, I use a learner-centered approach, encourage astute questioning, a cooperative stimulation of critical thinking, and I prefer an active versus passive teaching style. Regardless of the student's age, I want him/her to have fun as much as possible, so I strive to make the unavoidable repetitive exercises more enjoyable by facilitating the student's creative input.
