I have 10,000+ hours of teaching experience, and have been an active orchestral clarinetist for the past 15 years. I also play chamber music in various ensembles, and occasionally collaborate in world music settings such as flamenco and Latin music. I knew from the day I heard my middle school band teacher playing his saxophone that that was what I wanted to do. The passion has only continued to grow for me, and I want to pass my knowledge and passion onto my students. I graduated from Western Washington University in 2016 with a BA in music and a minor in audio recording. Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student's desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn and practice more. I am a very hands-on teacher. We do lots of improvisation and call and response games and sometimes I turn on a record or even bring a guitar to jam with the student. Playing drums is a very visceral, tactile excersize, and I often tell students, "That right there,that is how it's supposed to sound! Memorize that feeling and try to recreate it everytime." I am a lyric soprano, and have been performing and teaching for the past 35 years. I have performed opera, oratorio, Gilbert and Sullivan and concert repertoire. My particular interests are early music and 20th century art song. I teach at several different schools, and enjoy working with ages 13 through adult. I trained originally as a classical guitartist, and take guitar students from age 10 through adult. I am an avid performer of classical and contemporary music and a teacher based in Portland, OR. As a doctoral candidate at the University of Washington, I won the 2015 Concerto Competition and was a member of the scholarship chamber music ensemble for 3 years.
