Instruments: Clarinet
I teach Clarinet while incorporating the voice. Singing one's solo or exercise is a method for teaching intonation on the Clarinet. I also use a system of putting certain vowels to the different ranges of the Clarinet (i.e.- one should think "O" when playing in the Clarion register because thinking that vowel will naturally open one's throat). This eventually becomes second nature when the student doesn't have to think vowels. Read More

When starting with a young beginner student, I typically start with the beginning Suzuki Method books or Essential Elements books. I will also work on school repertoire if applicable. Once they have advanced past the level of the Suzuki books, I will begin to introduce solo works appropriate for their level and desire. When teaching adults of varying abilities, my methods are much more tailored to their wants in terms of style of music, difficulty of the pieces and the speed at which they would like to learn. Students learn best in different ways and at different paces. I enjoy getting to know my students' strengths and trying multiple strategies to help them learn new concepts. Learning to play an instrument is very special because students can see and hear their own progress in real time. This is what makes learning and teaching the horn so exciting! Read More

Regular, consistent practice is the foundation of progress and will be encouraged for all of my students. To keep things fun and engaging, a healthy mix of music styles will be covered. Over time, I will get to know my students and their musical interests and desires for the future, and plan accordingly. Read More

I am a patient teacher and encourge students to work at their own pace. If we need to spend more time on a certain concept or technique than one lesson allows, we will. I want to make sure that they understand throroughly before moving on to the next concept. At the same time, I want my students to feel challenged in their lessons so that they will be willing to go home and put the work in during their practice time. Read More
