I have most students start with Essential Elements for fundamentals.  Then I progress to solo and duet repertoire when the time a student is able to grasp counterpoint and rhythm well.  Adult students can often move faster due to being able to understand the math behind music.  I also try to incorporate theory and history and culture with my lessons. I love teaching guitar to motivated students. I have been fortunate to play and teach guitar for a living my entire life, and it is still exciting to help students find their voice on guitar. After teaching guitar for the University of Tennessee for 10 years, I moved to Nashville where I was able to tour the world playing music for 12 years. For beginning students, I usually prefer to use the Suzuki method, as this is the method I grew up on, and I prefer to teach the knowledge that I find useful in the method. However, my lessons are not solely based on my preference, as I identify individual strengths and weaknesses and target those in the sessions. Ability level also has a big role in planning the direction of the lesson, as I do not use Suzuki for advanced students. Read More

I usually start with the Rubank Elementary Method book. There are four books in the series and they are very comprehensive. Once the student progresses to the Intermediate book, I also add Selected Duets Volume 1. I have found that playing duets strengthens listening skills and intonation, plus they are fun!
