For adults I find out what they're interested in and instruct accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and always fun no matter what. My teaching experience started when a good friend introduced me to a family that has two daughters that were interested in learning music. The 11 year old wanted to learn how to play the drum set and the 14 year old was interested in playing the guitar. For very young pre-school students, I'd encourage them to learn the music by ear (Suzuki method) and through repetition in various ways. For older school-aged students I strongly believe in the importance of note-reading and I might use the Essential elements method books, that introduce the musical notation and theory concepts in a way appropriate for people with no prior musical training.
