Typically with beginner students I work through the Alfred's Piano series (Adult and Children) and we focus on performance, technique, ergonomics, theory, and ear training. If a student wishes to work on composition or music production, after a proper foundation, we can explore that as well. I try to keep the student as interested as possible,some have shorter attention spans then others and for them maybe i will do 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. others who are really into it and do not want to leave i may teach them for an hour and that often turns into 2 or 3 hours of just jamming and having fun at no extra cost because without students a maestro is nothing but a musician playing music. i love to play along with students so they are more prepared when they go out and make music with others musicians and they can stay in time with a drummer more easily. I prefer to teach my students the way I was taught, by learning to read and write music. There are students who prefer to learn by ear, but written instruction is always best for countless reasons. I use a combination of my own introductory lessons (which I customize depending on the age and maturity of the student) with published books and materials. For piano, I like to use the Alfred books and classical sheet music but I am always open to using other instructional books and songs that the student may want to learn. Read More

For children 7-11, I suggest a fundamentals book like Standard of Excellence or Accent on Achievement. Later, I will introduce an exercise book called the Rubank's Method, which helps with articulation and technical skill. I also will ask the student to pick a fun songbook which they will be motivated to practice. After completing my Master's Degree in Vocal Performance, I returned to UNM to attain a New Mexico Teaching License.
