Goals and ambitions are set at the beginning of taking lessons and as we progress in learning, After a certain amount of lessons, I'll do a review lesson to see what the student has retained, what we need to focus on, and assess skill level to that point. For beginning students under the age of 12, I typically like to start with Singing Lessons for Little Singers and New Singing Games for Young Singers: Ten Original Singing Games by Donna Rhodenizer. Once they have progressed and picked up the fundamentals from these lessons I like to move on to Hal Leonard's Giant Book of Children's Vocal Solos. I was an educator in the Seneca Falls Central Schools for 38 years where I first became an instrumental music teacher. I taught woodwind lessons grades 5-12 and conducted elementary and middle school bands. I coached high school woodwind groups and was assistant marching band director, as well as woodwind adjudicator for the NY State School Music Association. I graduated from Austin Peay State University in 2013 with a BS in Vocal Performance. I was in a world renowned children's choir back home in PR, called San Juan Children's Choir, for 10 years. I realize that each student is different, so I treat them as individuals. However, I do stress regular daily practice, even for short time periods. Regularity in practice is more important than long practice periods in my experience. I try to apply the three T's in my own playing and gradually incorporate these into my teaching, TASTE, TONE and TECHNIQUE. I enjoy seeing students progress because it reassures me that I understand the subject well, You have to know a subject 3 times as well if you teach it because a student will always ask a question you never thought of.
