My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 8 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

Instruments: Piano Flute

I like to use Trevor Wye's methods when I teach. I own the 6 volumes and I recommend that my students buy at least one of his books as well. For more advanced players, I introduce Paul Edmund-Davies' Daily Exercises. I stress the importance of long tones for the effect they can have on a flautist's tone, color, volume, etc. As mentioned before, I will also encourage students to enter competitions and/or find another opportunity to perform their piece in front of an audience/judges panel. After thirty years I still love to play and talk about music! I've added more instruments to my skillset over the years just so I can write and create more music out of my home studio. I just released my first album, Influenced, in 2017 and for the first time will be performing music from the album at Denton Arts & Jazz! My first professional music job out of high school was in the Army band where I spent four years playing my trumpet and seeing the world. Read More

I've been teaching music for more than 12 years now. I can honestly say that I enjoy teaching and sharing my knowledge of music. Not everyone can say that they truly enjoy their job so I feel blessed. I have taught hundreds of students ranging from ages 4 to 80! I have taught individuals, groups or online lessons. During the pandemic I was lucky to I keep working because of zoom lessons. I don't know what I would have done without zoom lessons. Read More

Instruments: Piano

I am a professional licensed educator, as well as, a mother of two grown children, both of which influence my teaching method. My style is individualized to the student's personality - what works for one may not work for another. One student may be very driven to learn theory and do written homework, while another may find written homework to be agonizing but love learning new pieces of music - I will work with both styles, with the same result - each student learns to play the instrument and learns the required theory to be able to play the piano, while hopefully enjoying it along the way! Piano: I enjoy the Alfred books as they explore the fundamentals of piano playing and provide tips for good habits. After having a good foundation for the fundamentals, I will move on to the Hanon book which explores technical exercises, scales, and arpeggios. Students will learn repertoire that will range from contemporary genres to classical genres. Organ: A piano background would be preferred. I like to start with the Davidson book and use Gleason for mastering the pedals. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice

I have been teaching private voice since 1991.  Along with teaching privately out of my home, over the years I have served on faculty as an adjunct voice professor at the college and university level, and have taught private voice in school districts for their junior high and high school choirs.  My own children study with me and are performing regularly in musical theater productions and choirs.  I love helping singers discover their beautiful, God-given singing voice and watching it blossom as they consistently practice and apply the techniques. Instruments: Flute Piccolo

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am extremely proud of my Master of Music in Flute Performance and being selected to study in the studio of legendary flutist Robert Willoughby during my graduate studies. I was also extremely honored to be selected as Principal Flute for the National Wind Ensemble which performed at Carnegie Hall.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I always loved the sound of the flute when I would watch the Boston Pops with my grandparents. As a fifth grader I was also drawn to the compact size of the case and the fact that it was easy to carry around.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
I believe that one of the most effective ways to practice is to work on the material in small manageable sections. Within each section it’s important to identify which parts are the most challenging. Once identified begin by working slowly on the difficult part making sure that notes and rhythms are accurate. At the end of your practice session trying playing the whole section that you worked on and see if it feels better to play.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is showing a strong interest in learning an instrument I believe beginning lessons with a qualified instructor from day one is extremely important. These lessons will allow your child to start off learning to play the instrument with the proper way to produce a tone as well as helping them learn the proper technique for playing their instrument.

When will I start to see results?
It is important to remember that in order to see the maximum results from lessons your child needs to be practicing their lesson assignments for the time period suggested by the teacher each day. Consistent practice accompanied with weekly lessons will provide the maximum result. Results will be much slower if your child is not practicing in between lessons. Every child is different however you should notice results after the first full month of lessons.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I was fortunate to have many influential teachers throughout my musical life. I began playing the flute in fifth grade band and from the moment I picked up the flute I was hooked. After trying several activities as a child and not really finding one where I fit in, I was thrilled to find band. It was early middle school when I decided that I wanted to pursue music for my career. It was the combined dedication of all of my teachers that helped me make that decision.
