Developing a good ear is essential when trying to express yourself musically. Piano technique is also essential when trying to execute what you want at the right moment. I began teaching when I was 15 years old, which was around the year 1984,in Brooklyn NY.I studied music at Samuel J Tilden High School and taught bass at Meyer Levin J.H.S two afternoons a week after school..In 1989 I moved to Charlotte NC, attended college and began working in various bands.I had to stop teaching for a short period of time due to my busy gig schedule.It wasn't long before I discovered that there was something missing in my life,and that something was teaching music.I have taught students from the ages of 9,which is the age that I started playing, all the way up to 60 years old.I encourage my students to practice and to have fun at the same time.I want them to not be afraid to try something such as listening to their favorite music and attempting to play it by ear.That is what I did when I was taking lessons.It is good training for the ear.When I see my students develop their craft and a love for music, that is one of the greatest feelings. I thoroughly enjoy customizing each student's lesson according to their learning ability and make sure they excel and have fun. I utilize most of the time the Alfred Piano method both for school age and adults. When I feel the student is ready I supplement quite a lot with the Hanon exercises,Czerny and the Master Theory workbook(this works very well with the student who also desires to learn to play by ear as well.) For repertoire I emphasize classical pieces and also help the student with pop and holiday pieces;i.e- Schumann's Album for the Young, Beginning Bach minuets,Bach and Clementi sonatinas,etc. Read More

At the beginning I will test the students on how much they know and what they like to play(soundtracks, gospel songs, songs out of the hymnal, classical etc). I start every lesson with positive and a little bit of chit chat to see how everything in their life is going. In the past, I have used several different band methods and generally like to first use the book that the students' school district is using. As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument.
