I am a very passionate and motivated instructor for not only music but trumpet as well. Im originally from New Mexico and began my career as a professional musician in 2015. I began playing the trumpet in middle school and haven't stopped since. Traveling has been one of the great joys of my time as a musician. For young beginner students, I use either Faber and Faber's Piano Adventures or Bastien Piano Basics. I also supplement these methods with level-appropriate materials from my private library. For adult students, lessons are tailored to meet the student's interests and purpose. Lesson times are learning times, but I try to make the process fun, with time for creativity and music games. I was born and raised in Hong Kong and am fluent in Cantonese, English and Mandarin. I grew up singing in a well-established school choir and won multiple awards in the local school music festival as soloist, duet partner, and chorister. I was accepted at the Chinese University of Hong Kong with Honors at entrance and continued to garner merit-based scholarships during college and eventually graduated with First Class Honors. I have taught as a substitute piano teacher at Laurie Ann's Music School (Orange, CA) and the Forte Music Academy (Garden Grove, CA). I have also worked as a Music Theory Tutor at Chapman University (Orange, CA) and as a Summer Band/Percussion Instructor at Valley Christian Schools (San Jose, CA). I have recently established my own piano studio and am looking to grow my studio! For beginning students, I will usually go with a methods book, requiring them to learn 5 finger patterns, and then eventually major and minor scales(all three forms). Once the student has progressed from the beginner methods book, I will suggest classical repertoire for each student based on their preferences and personal skill level. Though each student gets a lesson plan that is catered to their individual needs, I start everyone off with these three questions: Which musical artists do you listen do? What do you like about their music? What are your goals with taking lessons? I use this information to teach the student how to play some of their favorite songs, how to write similar music, and how to use my lessons as a means of achieving their musical goals I have found that doing so results in faster results, and increased motivation.
