Instruments: Clarinet
To be a better musician requires a strong solid foundation of the fundamentals. Clarinet maintenance, equipment, reeds. Body posture, finger position, embouchure. Musical understanding and expression, scales, etudes, and other repertoire. When I meet a new or prospective student, I first evaluate where in their training are they coming from. Beginner - Amateur - Advanced and so forth. Depending on what I initially hear by their playing I would advise them accordingly and inquire what they hope to achieve out of the lessons. Read More

I have varied experience relating teaching, whether it comes from teaching directly or other musical experiences. My earliest teaching experiences were mentorship programs in my local youth symphonies as a high schooler, and since then I've taught in afterschool programs, received my Suzuki Book 1 certification, and taught ear training in a classroom setting. Through my experience in teaching and chamber music, I really try to curtail expectations and goals to a student's individual wants from music making, so that students can feel proportionally challenged and confident to the amount of time they'd like to put in. My goal of teaching is to develop students so they can proceed to a professional study in music and enjoy the music for the rest of life. It is important that students should be trained in a professional way no matter what their career is going to be. I will not force any student to do anything, however, he or she will be strongly encouraged to practice as instructed. The lessons for young kids are always relaxing, and I will plan to put more or less content depending on their mood. Read More

Hello! I am a professional clarinetist originally from Portland, ME. I specialize in orchestral repertoire, however my career has allowed for solo engagements as well as extensive chamber music across North America and Europe. I currently serve as the Principal Clarinet of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and Phoenix, as well as Second/Bass Clarinet with Boston Lyric Opera. I strive to maintain relevance within my own playing while modeling it after clarinet icons throughout the generations, namely: Thomas Martin, Harold Wright, Daniel Bonade, Stanley Hasty, Larry Combs, and Robert Marcellus. For beginning and intermediate students, I like to assign short pieces from method books such as Student Instrumental Course and Rubank. For more advanced students, I will help them explore their particular interests, introduce them to traditional repertoire, and for jazz/rock/pop students, aid them in the process of transcribing the music they love, which benefits their vocabulary as well as their ears. In developing a complete musician, I want to offer support for my students' other musical activities, as well as provide them with resources that they might not have elsewhere. Read More

Over the years, I have come to understand that each individual has a different path to follow. Teaching in one specific way could help one student, but that same way could hamper another. For that reason, I create my teaching material after meeting my students. Although I have a lesson plan that includes the fundamentals of music, I adjust the way I teach the material in response to my students needs, interests and temperaments. Read More
