Then I use the Hal Leonard Guitar method to teach the fundamentals of reading music, music theory, etc. Then as the student grasps these simple tools I teach songs to reinforce how chord patterns work and finally move to the type of music the student is interested in. This emphasis also prevents injuries, and I've found it always improves the speed at which we learn. My teaching style is always relaxed. Gradually, as the student advances I learn how much I should expect from them and gently push them to expecting more from themselves over time.
