My method is to build a solid repertoire list in whatever style of music the student prefers, and then work to a clear understanding of the characteristics necessary to sing in that style. I love having conversation with students to get to know them and find ways the music can relate to them. It also helps me make my teaching more relatable to them. For beginning students I typically start them on just the snare drum by itself. The drum set has a lot of moving parts and I've noticed that kids get discouraged and sometimes quit when they don't pick things up as quickly as they would like too. Once they have an understanding of the fundamentals then we can continue moving forward in their musical development.
