Instruments: Voice Trumpet French Horn
Everyone learns and masters music at their own pace. Light bulb moments are the moments for which I live! Nothing says, "I am learning," like seeing a student understand a concept or command a new ability for the first time. I set realistic goals and help guide my students towards their goals. I keep my lessons relaxed but full of energy. A huge fan of positive reinforcement, I do my best to make sure that I give a complement or praise before I make any correction. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet
Practice doesn't make perfect; PERFECT practice makes perfect! The best way to develop a skill is to work consistently and carefully, which is why I encourage all of my students not just to practice until they get it right, but to practice until they can't get it wrong. That being said, students must work at their own pace for this method to be effective. Together, the student and I will set realistic goals at each lesson, allowing the student to feel a personal responsibility in achieving progress. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone Clarinet Music
My musical teaching goes back to high school, when I was the section leader in marching band on clarinet and the saxophone section leader in jazz band. I lead sectionals and helped those in my section learn the music and improve as players. I tried to make the sectional time as effective as possible, as we usually only had about 30 minutes. But I also believe in having fun while you work-if it's not fun, then something needs to change because music should be fun! Read More
Instruments: Piano Violin Keyboard
I approach piano and violin instruction from a foundational, constructive perspective, combined with building rapport and reciprocal clarifying communications. Essentially this means that the student and I interact to build understanding by using the familiar to grasp the unfamiliar. An example is: When teaching hand position, I use the natural position the student already has when the hand is relaxed to build the hand playing position. The student is encouraged to ask questions, to feel free to make mistakes in order to take the risks necessary for true understanding and growth, and to engage in productive discussion leading to personal clarity with regard to their playing. Instruments: Guitar Bass Guitar Electric Guitar Acoustic Guitar
My methods revolve wholly and completely around my students wants and needs. Generally for beginner students I will start by going over the basics, a small amount of essential music theory, how to read tabs and chord diagrams, and the different components and notes on a guitar or bass, before moving onto the fun part Ive found students tend to want to practice and play more when they are learning songs they love the most. Instruments: Trumpet
My beginner students use the Essential Elements book. With that book, you can learn fundamentals in trumpet technique as well as counting. For all other students, I use the Herbert L. Clarke Technical Studies book and selections from the Arban's Conservatory Method. We cover a lot of etudes and techniques from the Arban's book. I also believe collaboration is important in lessons so often we will play duets together in lessons. Read More
Instruments: Drums
Not only am I an accomplished musician, I am also a talented teacher. My hunger for effective teaching began as I often interacted with excellent musicians who were lacking only in their ability to teach their craft. My first experiences teaching percussion were at The Music School, formerly located in American Fork, Utah. There, I enjoyed giving private lessons to about 25 students who ranged from the ages of 5 to 50 years old. Read More
