I always start my lessons with a brief warm-up to get those fingers flexing! Then, we go through each assignment that was chosen for a particular skill development and look for where there is opportunity for celebration of progress/success. We then home or skills and understanding of tricky spots and continue developing our muscles, knowledge, and overall harping skills. I really began teaching when I was in high school and then going into college. During high school I was discovered by different middle school and elementary school music teachers and asked to come teach their students. As I began working at different schools, I was asked to give private lessons. I taught beginner masterclasses, private lessons, and traveled to different schools for about two years. I am a very hands-on teacher. We do lots of improvisation and call and response games and sometimes I turn on a record or even bring a guitar to jam with the student. Playing drums is a very visceral, tactile excersize, and I often tell students, "That right there,that is how it's supposed to sound! Memorize that feeling and try to recreate it everytime."
