I believe that each student is very individualized, and no student learns exactly the same as another. I began piano lessons in the 2nd grade, and studied flute and guitar, and finally settled on playing French Horn in High School. I took lessons from a horn player in the Detroit Symphony. I majored in French horn and orchestral conducting at the Rubin Academy in Tel-Aviv, Israel, and completed my Undergraduate degree at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. For beginning students who are completely new to the world of music, I typically start them with exercises and theory found in Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. This introduces them to the foundations of the guitar, such as basic chords, chord progressions, and the musical alphabet. Once they have the necessary understanding of the fundamentals, I then like to find out what music the student is interested in learning and apply these foundations in musical pieces they are familiar with. I'm very friendly and patient. Learning music should be enjoyable, and never a burden. My students learn at their own pace and have fun doing it. I'm happy to work with youngters, providing they have a basic grasp of letters and numbers. I encourage my students to conduct research outside of their lessons, in order for them to learn as much as possible about the history of their instrument, as well as the genre and style in which they are performing. I aid them with this research by providing introductory resources, eventually leading them towards general music databases. I also encourage students to listen to recordings of many different styles and genres in order to hear elements that cannot always be explained with words. Read More
