I just recently moved to the Greater Phoenix Area. I have a very strong passion for singing and bringing music to others. I have three degrees in opera, but I have worked professionally singing everything from standard ballads to gospel songs. Performing all over the world has given me the opportunity to sing and learn things about other cultures that I would otherwise never have known about. I was born in Cwmafan, South Wales, UK.into a house where the Welsh Language was spoken and sung. I was educated in Sandfields Comprehensive School, Hull then Cardiff Universities, where I studied with renowned Welsh composer Alun Hodinott. I taught in the London School system for several years. I emigrated to the USA in 1975, living and performing in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and then moving to Phoenix in 1989. My first lesson is a casual meeting with the student (child/parent, or adult). I want to both meet and start to develop a good relationship and understanding with all involved. With younger students I talk with the parent and show them what we are working on and the logic behind it. Of course, this strategy applies to adults as well. I have a very personal and relaxed way of teaching that helps each student enjoy and advance on their chosen instrument at their pace. I prefer 60 minute sessions to have the time to fully evaluate and advance from the previous lesson and to move on to new material. I like to maintain a fun atmosphere in my lessons. Especially for younger students, there will always be moments of frustration, so encouragement is key. The trombone is a very difficult instrument, especially for beginners, but with the right encouragement and dedication any student can thrive. The way I have always approached teaching is the same way i learned music, to try and make each concept make sense by breaking down and relating basic key points of playing and improvising to each other. For example, I like to emphasize breaking down chords and the related scales in an easy to undertand and logical way.
