Award-winning trombonist, Blake M., originates from Eastern Iowa. A performer of both jazz and classical, Blake has performed in many national and international festivals and contests including The Grammys, The Music For All Festival, The Sienna Jazz Festival, The Monterey Jazz Festival, The Montreal Jazz Festival, The Jazz Educators Network Conference, and the Iowa City Jazz Festival. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. For children, I would also offer a reward such as candy to boost their excitement and passion for learning piano. I've been blessed to have a very diverse variety of music and teaching job experiences. I began teaching private lessons as a Middle School Music Mentor with the Lied Center for Performing arts for LPS students my first year of University. Since then, I've also worked as a Visual and Music Tech for Lincoln High School's marching band, judged the Links Marching Band Contest, worked as a substitute Para Educator in Special Education in the middle, high school, and vocational school settings, and was the Music Director for the 2014 Penguin Project production of Annie Jr., the winner of a Mayor's Arts Award for that year. All students have different learning styles and speeds, and some students may take longer to understand certain concepts. For beginning students on brass instruments, we will send time getting the student to be comfortable holding and playing the instrument with a good, air driven sound. Once the student is able to reliably play their first notes in a rhythmic fashion, we can begin working on introducing music notation into the equation.
