Although drumset was my first instrument, I firmly believe in developing ability and musicianship primarily with the hands first. This doesn't mean we can't play full drumset from the beginning, but I do incorporate the practice pad as part of lessons regardless of age and ability level. These students (and their parents) are paying good money, so I'm going to deliver a solid and well rounded education. We will always cover what the student is primarily interested in, but it's also important to expose him or her to new things! Read More

I am a musician and teacher from Nyack, NY and I have been teaching private and group lessons for 8 years. I am as passionate about teaching as I am about playing, and I am always high energy and motivated to help students achieve their goals. I graduated from Oberlin Conservatory in 2018, and in my years as a musician I have performed with the likes of Gregoire Maret, Steven Bernstein, Ingrid Jensen, and more. Read More

I am deeply passionate about music as is demonstrated in my teaching. I'm an encouraging and patient teacher with the ability to assess the needs of my students easily. There are so many elements of music that I enjoy and appreciate which I convey to my students. I help them realize what it is they want to learn and what it is they appreciate about music. Most importantly, I aim to help my students to find their own individual expression in their guitar playing and/or songwriting. Read More

My pedagogy is based on the American jazz tradition and the teachings of Orff and Kodaly. I like to impart a holistic love of music in my students, without boring them with too much history or theory. However, it is my belief that theory and musical literacy will open doors to a greater level of fulfillment and understanding of music as a whole. The materials I use vary from student to student and from instrument to instrument, depending on each student's goals and progress. Read More

Each student is so unique, so I tailor my curriculum to fit their goals. However, I ensure that each student walks away with ownership over the fundamentals of singing technique, so that they can grow on their own. We begin with a strong foundation and breathing technique, then weave in supported singing. With emphasis on breathing, we liberate the sound and expand the range. Then, we work to find resonance and beauty in the sound, so that the student may sing whatever style they choose! Read More

For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. Read More

My teaching drum set experiences started over 15 years ago when I was playing many different styles of music. I wanted to be able to assist and encourage my students to be able to play drums and vibes or marimba. Teaching mallet instruments to drum set students allowed me to help the student see why he or she played certain drum set grooves and fills at certain points. It always fascinates me when people see how chords (on a mallet instrument) lock into a drum set groove. Read More
