Chamber music (small group) is what gives me the most satisfaction in playing and performing. In orchestral music, every wind player is a soloist. As a chamber player, not only is everyone a soloist on their part, but, the musical demands of being a rhythmic, melodic and harmonic foundation for each others' primary voice are broader, deeper, more technically challenging, and, can be truly intimate and immensely expressive communication. I started teaching horn in 1976 and have taught ever since. Students are to perform not only a recital if possible or play a solo as part of a musical program but to play in a musical organization if possible. My teaching began teaching in the US Army with under performing horn players with technique, hand positioning and air control. The instruction continued through 19 years as an enlisted Army musician. Two years was in active duty service in Europe. Read More

For beginning students, I usually employ the Rubank method books. These books, while not as flashy as others, are exceptional for building technique, musicality, and reading skills. In addition, my students focus upon proper tone production, technique, and posture as we explore their musical preferences. I encourage my students to explore the genres of music that they enjoy as well. Through fun Disney excerpts, jazz transcriptions, pop music, or any other passion, we keep our lessons productive, yet fun. Read More

For my beginning students, I will typically teach out of the Sound Innovations methods books and incorporate certain lessons from other method books as well. After a foundation has been established, I will introduce solo repertoire and begin to work toward recitals and local competitions. I introduce concepts from a variety of composers, styles, and periods, but I also want to encourage the child's love for music so I take into account what things they have heard and possibly want to learn.
