I am a passionate, motivated, and an experienced music instructor. I have been playing guitar and other various instruments since I was 11 - I'm currently in my mid thirties. I graduated in 2014 with an Associates degree in music from Sierra Community College, where my main focus was guitar and composition. Soon after, I transferred into Sacramento State's guitar program where I gained extensive knowledge of guitar scales, chords, and applicable techniques that make every day playing more enjoyable and professional. For piano students: I love to get my students started with the fundamentals of music through hands-on experience with the piano. I want them to explore the instrument and get creative from the get-go! I also want them to understand that: - creating music is fun and easy - music can tell stories - music is more than pushing down keysit is art, which involves dynamics, speed, feeling, etc. - music is made up of chords, patterns and melodies - music can be transposed into different keys At the first lesson, I show my students how to sit properly at the piano and use their arms, wrists and fingers correctly. It's important to me to cater my teaching style to each student. Not all students learn the same way so its not a one size fits all. Some of my students need more pressure and more practice and want to have more material and others like a more laid back approach. I will spend the first 1-3 lessons to figuring out what your preferred learning method is, what the problem areas are, and what kind of books, tools, and games I should prepare for the rest of our classes. My teaching career began at age 18. I started with only two students, and have since grown to teaching at three studios with 23 students across all studios. My main focus with all of my students is to expose them to all that music can offer them. Not only is music scientifically proven to improve brain function (it literally makes you smarter), it also promotes important qualities in young students; being an instrumentalist helps you learn responsibility (taking care of an instrument), discipline (daily practice), and perseverance (continuing to play despite mistakes). My teaching style consists of compassion, patience and developing discipline for ones instrument little by little. Nothing is pushed, but my philosophy is "bit by bit." I want the student to be able to be challenged at the same time having fun and enjoying their instrument. I do have my own feel for each student which is completely different and varies to their ability, personality and behavior, but I am constantly tuned into my students to and what their needs and likes are. This approach helps students to understand the material faster and clearer. I like to think outside the box and therefore, am not strict on following one specific method or structure because something that can work for one student may not for the other. Therefore, I encourage my students to use the methods that best work for them. Whether I am teaching music performance or music education classes I always tend to focus on the basics. Read More

I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the singing and acting and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn.
