I Have been playing the guitar for 15 years and have been teaching for 10 years. From 2005 - 2008 I studied Guitar Performance and Music Theory at The Musicians Institute of Hollywood, CA. For students that are new to music I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, this book is really good to start to learn about music and the instrument, and then Suzuki method for repertoire. My teaching style is based primarily on theory and practice. While every student can and will progress according to their needs, I think its important to start with basics, like how to properly hold and play the instrument. Once the basics are down, well usually transition towards learning more music theory, like scales and chord structures, and how to build a song from the ground up. For example, classical guitar requires perfection of technique for good execution. This requires practice of scales, arpeggios and such. I start beginners with the drum rudiments and chart reading. This gets them able to move their hands and feet for better coordination. After they have better coordination I introduce ear training which is playing along to their favorite songs. This teaches the student how toplay with a band.
