Mary has primarily studied classical trumpet, but also has training in jazz and world music. She currently plays principal trumpet in the Bravura Philharmonic and occasionally performs with the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, and the Garden State Philharmonic. Shes also a member of the Philly Bloco and the Bella Vista Brass Quintet. Shes been involved in many performance groups including but not limited to the Vassar Wind Ensemble, Penn Orchestra, Marsyas Ensemble and numerous Purchase Conservatory ensembles including the symphony orchestra, graduate brass quintet, Latin jazz orchestra, klezmer ensemble, and the new music ensemble. I've been teaching piano to students of all ages as my sole profession since 2002.  I usually have between 20 and 25 students at a time.  I have also earned certification through the Music Teachers National Association through a combination of testing and proofs of competency.  I keep up to date professionally  through my memberships in Lancaster Music Teachers Association and the Main Line Music Teachers Association, the National Guild of Piano Teachers and in my role as the Center Coordinator for the Music Development Program.  Most of all though, I've learned from my students, who are always the best teachers.  The part I love best about my job is that I get to cater the curriculum to each student individually.  Each student can have their own "best assignment". It is most important to me that my students become passionate about what they do! I realize that every student learns differently and has different interests than my own. Because of this, I like to cater my lessons to what they would like to do as often as possible and through this I find creative ways to incorporate fundemental technical elements into the lesson. This can be through creating patterns to practice using the material of a musical phrase from their favorite song or expanding their playing range on the instrument by playing it in different keys and octaves. For young beginners, I assess the best approach - be it a particular method book or writing out my own studies geared toward the individual. From the first lesson, proper bow technique is emphasized, helping the student get a pleasing sound in the first lesson. For older students (teens and up), I teach to their goals and interests, welcoming and encouraging their input. Communication is vital.
