Instruments: Voice
While my degrees are in music and performance, I have been teaching privately part time at my Universities for 4+ years, and now I am currently teaching students in my home studio, as well as student in home lessons. In both voice and piano I have experience in both classical and contemporary repertoire. I always encourage students to start with classical music, and as they progress in their skills, I normally start adding more contemporary pieces. Read More

I have had quite a few teaching experiences throughout the past few years. In high school I was a section leader for three years in the marching band, and helped a group of around 15 trumpets with music and marching fundamentals. In college I was a staff member in the Spirit of San Antonio marching band for one year. I helped out the trumpet section with marching music and with the visual aspects of marching. Read More

My lessons are very structured and fun. I incorporate games, visual aids, physical application, and live demonstrations to help appeal to the different styles. I do expect a high level of commitment from students while still being understanding that life doesnt always allow us to practice hours and hours a day. Since I do provide a lot of information within each lesson, I add a 5 minute break (if needed) to help clear the mind or just rest the eyes/arms since staring at music for a long period of time or holding up an instrument for a long period of time can be quite taxing. I teach always. I teach by example, and I teach formally. My formal teaching background begins in church when I was 19. I did my mom a favor and started teaching/leading the children's choir. It was fun, I enjoyed it thoroughly, and our 2 performances went GREAT! It gave me a taste for it so I became an actual teacher in the SMCISD school district as a Focus Teacher (Special Education). What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Legos. This simple child's toy is incredibly helpful for thinking about effective practice on the instrument. Let's say I want to learn a long and complicated run as part of a guitar solo. Instead of tackling the entire thing as a whole I think of it as a bunch of Legos. I learn 3-4 notes which is my first Lego and I get that down perfectly. Then I learn the next 3-4 notes and now I have two Legos that just like in real life I can snap together to make something bigger. I continue this process throughout the entire piece I want to learn. Learn individual Legos, work on seamlessly snapping them together to make bigger groups, and eventually you have the long and complicated run learned and ready to be played!!
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I fell in love with the guitar at an early age as a vehicle for self-expression and an outlet for my artistic passions. There really is no other feeling like being able to make music on such an amazing and beautiful instrument!!
When will I start to see results?
"You get out of it what you put into it" as the saying goes so this is very much tied to the individual student and how much time and effort they put into making their guitar dream a reality. Hard work and diligence will always yield great rewards and the guitar is no exception!!
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
The guitar teacher at the local music store in the mall was a huge influence even though I never took any lessons from him or even met him personally. I still remember watching in awe as he ran through some smoking hot pentatonic runs that blew my young mind though. He was definitely someone who made me say "I want to be able to do that!!" and now I can. Thank you for being awesome Mr. Guitar Teacher I don't know and much respect to you for the influence you had upon my young and impressionable self!!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Can they hold the guitar? This is the number one issue for starting young children on the instrument. I usually start lessons at 7 years old because physically that is when the majority of children will be able to hold the guitar. There are always exceptions in both directions and some young children will need a Half-Size guitar to get started. As long as they can get their fingers around the neck and hold the guitar up they should be good to go!!
