Instruments: Cello

For all my students I want to get to know their interests and goals as a musician. I always start with technique and scales with 2 pieces. I always suggest using a metronome and tuner and listening to recordings of the pieces. Physical positioning with the cello is also very important incorrect instruction on posture can lead to injury’s, discomfort and intonation problems. I want to educate my student and give correct information and teach them in the best way possible. Read More

Instruments: Lute

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Many Lutenists and Guitarists would agree that consistency of articulation is their premier nemesis! The ability to play in a way that is accurate and meaningful is always the most important and most difficult aspect of playing.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Having a structure and interior vision of your goals is really important. Playing music appropriate for your level is key, and moving on when needed is sometimes hard to do. I believe this is where a tutor can be immensely helpful. In that regard, practice should be just that - practicing the necessary techniques, fundamentals and observing the correct hand postures are imperative.

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Indeed, many of my students went on to win competitions such as the Young Talent Award, Classical Guitar Summit Championship and Musician of the Year (Junior College)

What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I'd love to play Marco Dall'aquilla's 54th Ricercar (which I am practicing.) It is written just after the Medieval period, in the Phyrigian Mode - the mode of the soul.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I like to advocate that when the initial interest and ability to hold the Instrument occurs - it is time. Generally, this is about the age of 7. However, you, the parent, know your child and when they could confidently approach a fun lesson with the ability to retain the information.

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
Working on Instruments, no doubt. It's hard to imagine myself not involved in music at some capacity. Perhaps if I weren't a player, I'd want to make and repair.

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I prefer to create individual lesson plans as students are all different-minded. However, I do enjoy old literature (1550-1770) about technique regarding Fretted Instruments. (Don't worry, you don't have to speak French or Italian - I will translate ?)

When will I start to see results?
The results, provided the student utilizes the advice and directions given, May be seen nearly immediately. The first two lessons are meant to inspire and offer a clear, fun path to musical success.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I have been fortunate to tour this beautiful country several times, playing in all states (aside from Alaska & Hawaii.) My accolades and monetary gains are very meaningless in the shadow of all the lovely people and country I encountered during those years.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
First, my practice plan of selected music. Then, a warm up that is based on the given music, both for left and right hand. From there, the music is addressed phrase by phrase as to create smaller pieces of music within the music.

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
The natural love of the Music really compelled me to venture out to New areas. This is how I picked up the handful of Instruments that I try to play well.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I was very drawn to plucked Instruments my whole life, really. The Lute, my primary Instrument, is basically a time machine or window into another world of absolute grandiose and beauty. I was drawn to it's gentle and bell like quality. It just felt so true and mysterious.
