For younger students, especially children, I will begin their first vocal lesson by standing next to them and showing them how to stand with correct posture. Then I will move on to breathing by having the child place their hand on their diaphragm. I will show them that it is the muscle right above their stomach. In the best way possible, I will explain to them that in order to breathe correctly, they must be able to feel their stomach move in and out instead of their chest. Read More

Hello everyone! My name is Jake. I am recent graduate of Syracuse University, where I received my BM in Voice Performance. This fall, I will begin my MM in Voice at Boston Conservatory. My aspirations are to become as successful as I can in the music business, particularly in opera. While I am still very young, I have been fortunate enough to work with conductors such as Christian Capocaccia and Larry Loh, and have worked with several wonderful singers at Syracuse Opera. In May of 2016, I graduated from the University of Connecticut holding a bachelors degree in Music. At UConn, I took - and currently take private lessons with Metropolitan Opera bass-baritone Rod Nelman. My time at UConn was diversely beneficial, granting me opportunities to perform in operas, musicals, an a capella group, a marching band, and professional-level choirs that have performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall. I spent a semester taking classes with the Neag School of Education, working a teaching clinical in a nearby middle school, and a semester with the School of Business, studying entrepreneurship and managerial/interpersonal behavior. My teaching experience dates long time back, when I start teaching music to my young daughter and her friends. I never stop those activities, teaching my friends, their kids and grand kids, organizing musical shows, puppet theaters and life concerts at homes, libraries, churches. Music has no borders, it is international language of hearts and souls Therefore It must be live, must be heard, must be done together. I am teaching professionally for 15 years. Read More

What are the parents'/guardians' musical backgrounds? What has the student learned/is currently learning via another teacher (most likely a band director)? For the beginning drum set student, I start by establishing a fundamental understanding of rhythm and reading rhythm before transitioning directily to drum set. This way, when the student sits down at a drum set, they can focus on the using multiple limbs without struggling with understanding and/or fundamental rhythms. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs, whether it's beginner, intermediate or advanced student. Read More

The most important thing to me as an instructor is that the student is enjoying their journey as the progress; the challenges and rewards equally. Part of this, I believe, is achieved by always striving to keep the exercises and practices as musical as possible. One of the major obstacles when learning the guitar versus, say, the piano, are the immediate physical demands. The guitarist must grow calluses, alter the way their hands naturally move and stretch.
