Music is definitely my passion, and I love taking any opportunities I get to help spread my love for music to others. So far, I have two degrees in music: my Bachelor's from the University of Indianapolis in Percussion Performance (with concentrations in composition and recording) and my Master's from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music in composition. I'll be entering into my doctoral degree in composition at UC-CCM in the spring of 2015, but don't let my graduate pursuit of composition degrees fool you - I'm definitely a percussionist at heart, and timbre is one of the primary focuses of my compositions. Each student learns differently, therefore I will be constantly working to see what style of teaching works best for each individual. I have found that constant encouragement keeps students engaged and eager to learn and to let the music itself challenge the student. By finding out what a student is most interested in we can keep their love of music alive and use it to help them further learn to reach their goals. Read More

I supply all of the materials for my students. For beginners, I ask that they choose 5 songs they really want to learn to play. Through those songs, I can introduce many technical and musical concepts. It is very important that this is a positive musical experience. For other skill levels, I assess their skill level and proceed accordingly to help them achieve their musical goals, working with technique and musicality to create a great player. Read More

Generally speaking, I use a learner-centered approach, encourage astute questioning, a cooperative stimulation of critical thinking, and I prefer an active versus passive teaching style. Regardless of the student's age, I want him/her to have fun as much as possible, so I strive to make the unavoidable repetitive exercises more enjoyable by facilitating the student's creative input. I teach sight-reading and classical guitar using the Sagrares Method, and advise (particularly guitarists) on health and wellness methods developed by Dorothy Taubman. Read More

For beginning students, I usually prefer to use the Suzuki method, as this is the method I grew up on, and I prefer to teach the knowledge that I find useful in the method. However, my lessons are not solely based on my preference, as I identify individual strengths and weaknesses and target those in the sessions. Ability level also has a big role in planning the direction of the lesson, as I do not use Suzuki for advanced students. Read More

My teaching style is fun and goal oriented. I like to meet my students where they are and grow from there. I spend a lot of our first sessions asking questions and learning about what makes them excited about music, who they love to listen to, who they love to sing, and go from there. I believe in building a solid technique through both technical and anecdotal examples. I want to make sure I am always focused on what my student wants to get out of our time together. Read More
