I have used Hal Leonard and Bastien. If the parent has a older method book they wish to use I start there and fill in as I see needed. I encourage a slow start to get all the basics understood, then progress at the student's own pace and interests. Handouts and charts are supplemented as most students can't afford all the music books requested in a series. If a student feels frustrated then a short walk from piano to the other side of the room shaking out the arms and fingers gets us back on track. Read More

However, it is my goal to give students the tools to learn music on their own such as sight reading skills, daily practice tools, and practice strategies so they are trained to hear if something is wrong and know how to fix it when I am not present. For beginning students I teach out of whatever book they are using in their school program and if none then I provide my own material, so there is no cost for parents unless the student wants to learn music outside of band, which they purchase on their own. I have completed my student teaching as a string specialist at Elkridge Landing Middle School and Elkridge Elementary School in Maryland. It has been a wonderful experience, allowing me to become skilled teaching music in public school setting.
