Instruments: Piano

I am a motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my passion for music. I studied at The Center of Music, in Virginia Beach, Va. Playing the piano has been one the most fulfilling accomplishments of my life. I've had the opportunity to work with song writers and compose music for them and accompany singers during their performances. Music is a gift that I love sharing with my students and my goal is to help my students meet their musical goals, one lesson at a time. Read More

For beginning students, the Faber Faber series or the Alfred series are recommended as a core repertoire. A Dozen A Day is recommended for daily warm-ups and I also provide the students with supplementary songs and books of their choice, such as Disney, pop, jazz and popular classical pieces transcribed for beginner piano. For adult students, I use the Faber Faber method book that provides an overall comprehensive and fast pace lesson style. Read More

I am a pianist and educator originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia! I love to perform, but I am also passionate about educating the next generation of musicians. I studied music very seriously as a child, which led to many performance opportunities in the area and around the world! I have played concerti with several fantastic orchestras, and I greatly enjoy playing chamber music. My most recent job took me around the world performing with a piano quintet. Read More

Instruments: Saxophone Clarinet

I have been playing saxophone for almost 30 years. I started in the 5th grade and instantly fell in love with the sax. In the seventh grade, I found a new love, the violin. After only a year of playing, I obtained the status of concert master. I continued both through high school and in the ninth grade I added the bassoon to my list of insturments. I graduated from Norfolk State University in 2006, majoring in both the saxophone and bassoon. Read More

Instruments: Guitar

As a teacher, I always want to accomodate to the student's vision of what he or she would like to achieve through learning music. Personalizing lesson plans and objectives in this way is extremely empowering to the student and promotes more devotion of time to learning outside of the lessons. I strongly believe the most important way to measure a student's progress is by setting short-term and long-term goals. By helping the student develop or facilitate their goals, learning music is far more rewarding and will become an activity that will last a lifetime. Read More

I am a very strong believer in hands-on teaching. We will always warm up at the beginning of a lesson, and work on technique and basics. After, depending on your concentration and skill level, we could work on expanding your repertoire, or learning new grooves and rhythms. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice is just that, going over and over a lick, and part in your music that you don’t understand. Developing a regiment for this is suggested by the instructor. This does not mean it works for you. Try short bursts of time/energy, say 1-2 bars of a passage that you just can’t get in Tempo. Slow it down, use your metronome at a slow marking that you don’t make mistakes, slowly build up the tempo until you reach the desired tempo. This helps you get over the hump, also try 10-15 minutes several time a day, this helps your concentration, and I bet you have plenty of other things to do.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
They have asked you for an instrument, so that’s good, but do they really need lessons? This is a tough question. Beginners do need some type of instruction, how to hold the instrument, how to make sounds, properly, but some beginners learn from others or are a natural. Try to pick and instrument that requires little expense, buy a used guitar, not a new one. If money is no object, then buy the new one. Most beginners think they want to play an instrument, but when they start, and don’t really get into it, they lose interest. I suggest you decide on an instructor and take 4 lessons, step back and evaluate the lessons with your child.

When will I start to see results?
Some beginning students take 3-6 months to develop their musical awareness. Others longer, This depends on any physical limitations regarding the instrument of choice. The bass guitar requires callouses on the left hand to be comfortable. This takes awhile depending on the students practice time. If the student plays the Double bass, this requires bowing technique as well. This takes practice. Keep conversation ongoing with your child, make sure this is working for them.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I did have inspiration, I listened to the radio and played bass lines to songs. My ears honed in on the bass So I was able to hear the bass line and then find it on the instrument and memorize it. My influences were, Paul McCartney, still one of the best rock bass players alive today. My parents always help me, my mom is a piano player and my dad sang in Barbour shop quartets and taught himself piano. Mostly, I decided I wanted to learn music and make it my main source of income.
