After practice with those skills, I will give more challenging pieces and scale studies to start working on their proficiency on the instrument. The student will always get a choice in the amount of work and practice they would like to put in, but the more practice the better. Not only will my students get a choice in how much work they would like to put in, but also in what work they will be doing. Read More

For beginners, I use Alfred's books. They are very easy to understand. Alfred's Book Course are the most valuable books I have ever seen. I use Alfred's: lesson book, theory book, technique book, notespeller booke, and recital book. I usually make sure to include recital book as we are going to start our first recital this year. I also make sure that we alternate between lesson and technique book every lesson. Read More

For beginning piano students, I use a combination of books from Alfred's, Faber, John Thompson's. At the same time, I emphasize proper finger technique, shape, and position. For more advanced piano students I prefer exercises from Hanon, Czerny, and Bartk. For beginning guitar students, I prefer Mel Bay books. However, for guitar students I also use a much more individual and custom approach for learning how to get a good sound out of the guitar through proper hand position, finger placement and pressure, and string picking. My experience in teaching has been a very different ride than most. I was asked by Black Cat Music Shop if I would be interested in teaching and at first I was scared and didn't think I was ready. After having a hand full of students and seeing them progress faster than I thought they would I got excited for them. I then began more and more classes. I started teaching short 30min classes and 60min classes. Read More

I can't remember a time when I wasn't singing, banging on the family piano, or making joyful noise with whatever could be hit, shaken or kicked. I got a guitar at age ten--blame the Beatles!-- took some lessons, learned some songs by ear, and was giving my first lesson before I was out of high school. I studied music formally at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., graduating Cum Laude. Read More

I combine patience with an upbeat demeanor to provide entertaining and informative lessons for students. I want my students to improve and I understand that in order to improve I need to motivate my students. Kids see results working with me and that is why they enjoy the lessons. Soon they find themselves wanting to practice on their own time and really love the experience seeing themselves grow as a musician. Read More

My goal for each and every student is for them to become proficient enough on their instrument that they can enjoy it for the rest of their lives. This can be achieved through lessons and regular practice. Those who practice regularly tend to be more successful and progress at a faster rate. I encourage older school age students to participate in school orchestra and those who are excelling in their instruments to audition for local youth orchestras. Read More
