Young children literally have a small voice so they cannot produce the same volume or quality of sound as an adult. For young children that are ready to start training, the lessons are structured to avoid straining the voice. The music chosen for young students is age-appropriate, lyric-appropriate and within the range of a young voice. I accompany my students on the piano and can transpose music that a child likes to a key that is easier for them to sing. Read More

I'm a trombonist in my last semester of my Master's degree in performance and chamber music at the University of Michigan, and am so excited to share my knowledge with students of any age. I believe that music should evoke strong feelings in both the performer as well as the audience members, so my teaching approach aims to foster musicality and the love of music in all forms. I've worked on and performed just about every style of music under the sun that trombones are utilized in so I am adaptable to whatever kind of music students want to work on, not just strictly classical. After a sufficient "warm up" period is achieved, ensemble is next. At the more basic level I try to focus on duets. If group work is indicated trio, quartet (or more) is possible. Doubling parts may be needed (depending on task). I like to use a battery operated keyboard as drum machine (metronome) for teaching too. I use the Faber method for my beginner students. Sometimes with students who are 4 or 5 years I use the pre-beginners books from Alfred. Other times I use the Suzuki method, depending on the level of understanding. Alongside those books, I use technique books to build good, strong hand especially for young kids. As we move along I start giving solo repertoire from different eras of music to introduce the student to different kinds of music from different composers. Read More
