The beginning students always start in a book, which is usually John Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers to Play", or for the older students, "Bastien's Book for Older Beginners."  As they move along, the students often have an idea of what they want to play, and often bring me music, especially the adolescents.  I can determine more upon working with the student over time. Having studied under a number of very different teachers, I have learned that motivation to practice comes and goes, but passion is what builds a lasting foundation for musicianship. I constantly adapt and customize the lesson material according to the age of the student and the styles of music they are interested in learning. If a student has trouble with a particular concept, I might write an additional lesson for the student to get extra practice. For very young students, I create fun exercises in order to hold their interest. I first started teaching guitar in high school after i got a few lessons from someone i looked up to in high school. From then on i have loved to teach music to all ages!. My longest student started at 12 and by time he was 17 years old i told him he would be having to teach me a few things soon. we became friends and were in a band together for a while until i moved south, i loved having that connection, and i hope to find plenty others like that. it makes me feel good knowing others are gaining from my teaching so i do my very best! I like using the Faber books for children and supplement with classical pieces from Snell. For adults, I see where they are and use adult beginning books or other appropriate material depending on their interests. I usually start each student learning their major chords through the keys as soon as they are physically able, because once you learn your chords, sight reading and other playing becomes much easier. i also teach scales because if you can play your scales you can learn to play in all different keys.
