First lesson I start by assessing what level the student is at and what goals they have with their music and develop a lesson plan from there. I focus first on fundamentals of sound and technique to build a foundation for the student then work on scales and repertoire to get them playing music. From there it is a focus on musicality and performance. A lesson plan for example may be working on solo repertoire by breaking down the piece by focusing on different elements that make the song; the scale, they rhythm, certain patterns by measure, techniques required, etc. Read More

I like to select a basic book on fundamentals supplemented with blues, popular, or jazz or seasonal music to Motivate the student. There will be some attention to scales and how chords are built along with other theory as it applies to the pieces they are studying. Some attention is required due to the cycle of fifths and why some keys are selected more than others. As far as beginners go, when I was taught piano I used Alfred's Basic Piano library, among other similar books. I felt nothing was forced or unnecessary with those books, and it gives a good opportunity to set a nice goal-oriented pace with moving on up in skill level all the way to the upper intermediate level. I have the most experience teaching young students (about 7 years old) who have had no experience or instruction in music. In such a case, I start with the fundamentals of music (how to read music), theory, and keyboard skills. My methods include a wide variety of resources. For beginning students I like both the Hal Leonard and John Thompson approaches. Along with the lesson books, i also encourage technical studies including scales, arpeggios and other studies to build up finger strength, dexterity and independence, As the student progresses, I introduce memory work, choring and basic improvisation.
