For young beginners, I like to use Alfreds Basic Piano Library books. The songs inside are simple, fun, and are a great introduction to piano and music theory! For older beginners and more advanced students, Ill use Piano Adventures and The Piano Bench of Classical Music. Ill also throw in a favorite theory and technique book according to students age. My lessons will consist of classical piano training theory, technique, and performance but we can apply this to any piece the student wants to learn! Read More

I've been teaching in the greater Los Angeles area for almost 20 years, teaching students from ages 4 - 92 (yes, really! 92!). Levels range from beginning to professional, with advanced students having won scholarships and awards. I encourage all of my students to learn the language of music; to learn about their instrument and the best means of expression using that instrument. For the past 8 years, lessons have been supplemented with an annual holiday recital where students have the opportunity to perform, which is an important part of the learning process! Read More

For all students from beginners to adults I use Alfred's Piano books as they are very transparent and easy to follow. I also strongly believe that even beginner students as early as 4 can learn scales and chords even though many teachers don't introduce such things until they reach an older age and have more experience. It is very apparent to me that many teachers under estimate how truly brilliant children are and how they can soak up material much more quickly at a younger age. Read More

I have taught private lessons, part time for over 15 years. The instruments I teach are the piano and violin. I find that students progress more with regular short intervals of daily practice. I like to make the music fun with songs that children like and then have other books with the basics. For adults I like to start with folk songs, classical music, and showtunes. My students learn with a variety of books from a lesson book to a notes speller to a classical book. Read More

Practice expectation is 30-45 minutes per day, 5-6 days per week. YEARS 6-8: LATE INTERMEDIATE/EARLY ADVANCED LEVEL Students who stay in lessons for this long have a skill set that sets them up for the rest of their lives. There is a level of mastery achieved that allows for incredible freedom to learn whatever one might want; Classical, Jazz, Pop, or otherwise. Student music requests are expected. At this stage, students may need to make choices about how to spend their time. Read More

I Try to get away from mechanism without joy. Everything has to be close to the music. Exercises to be actually doing them with a rhythm and time. Other than doing things musically, practicing in different times and intentions help a lot for the student to be open to play songs in different ways. Technique and theory are necessary tools. To apply concepts musically they need to do it with musical taste. Read More
