My teaching experience began right after college when I started my voice and piano studio in Ohio. I maintained a private voice and piano studio for several years until moving to the East Coast. My students participated in several recitals throughout the year and competed in area music competitions. For several years, I taught music in the public schools and at the university level. I am also an active performer and music director in many area theaters. Read More

I decided early on to become a musician and pursued this goal through my education. I started piano at age 8 and continued with them for the next 15 years. I also studied trumpet from elementary school through high school. After finishing my studies I began teaching to supplement my income. It would go on to be a full time profession. I love to pass on my knowledge of the art to other generations in the way that my five teachers did for me. Read More

My strategy generally is to focus on fundamentals as well as effective strategies for practicing at home. I have found that most improvement happens at home in your living room on your 3rd or 4th practice session of the week, which is one of the most fulfilling feelings in the world. Lessons then become a pit stop for encouragement, updating goals and strategies, and learning a little of the why behind the what (music theory). Read More

I believe in developing five core areas in musicianship: Theory/Understanding, Technique, Creativity, Reading, and Versatility. Initial lessons will identify the students strong points and weak points, and a personal strategy will be employed to help strengthen and balance the student overall. Many beginning classical musicians are able to read fairly well but have little to no comprehension of how and why the music works; while many contemporary musicians may have "chops" but lack in their ability to read and/or have proper technique. For piano students ages 5-9, I generally use the Faber and Faber Piano Adventures series. For piano ages 10-12 I use the Older Beginner series. My teen and adult students normally work out of and Adult All in One series. For more advanced piano students Ill work repertoire, theory and scales/technique as needed/desired by the student. For voice, I tailor the lessons to the students age, interest and ability. Read More

Ever since I can remember, I've been singing and learning everything I can about music. I studied composition at Haverford College, where I led a number of vocal ensembles and music directed several musical theater productions. While at Haverford, I toured colleges on the East Coast with my male-voiced a cappella group, and I also toured both Mexico and Germany with the Chamber singers of Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges. I start each student with the Frances Clark Series. This is terrific in introducing all musical components to the learner. It starts off right away using ALL the notes on the piano. Black notes are used exclusively in some repertoire. Each building block is built upon the next and it just nicely adds , in a non-threatening way to what the student has learned before. I intersperse these books with other more seasonal books and the student and I build on that. Read More
