Ive had mixed success with students singing in tune. Some have no problems. With others, Im working hard with them at recognising and singing high and low notes as well as pitch matching. From there, I teach them to play each song on the piano through imitation. Through spaced repetition and regular review, I expect them to play these pieces from memory. What Ive observed is that there seems to be a spectrum: some students have a far easier time of memorising the songs and playing them at the piano. Read More

I introduce scales right away and each student usually has a technique book. I also incorporate games into lessons for young students to keep it fun. As students advance I introduce sheet music and music they like. For adults, there are a couple of chord method books by Alfred and Faber available and I use those unless they request something specific to work on. Therefore, it is important that I develop a specific teaching plan for each student. I encourage setting goals for each student to track progress and celebrate every accomplishment, making students eager to learn more.
